Is Alcohol Detox at Home Safe?
Alcohol withdrawal is a serious medical event, and detoxing alone can be dangerous. A supervised medical detox is a much safer process than trying it on your own: your nurse assesses vital signs and withdrawal symptoms around the clock using the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment (CIWA) scale, and a qualified prescriber directs medication throughout. Outpatient detoxification is supported in the medical literature, including American Family Physician’s review of outpatient detoxification of the alcoholic patient.

Neither setting is better for everyone; they are different. Given our one to one model of care, the home detox is usually more individualized than a program dividing its staff across ten, twenty, or fifty clients, and it happens where you are most comfortable.

Medications During Your Detox
Medication can be prescribed that will decrease the negative symptoms of alcohol detox and decrease the chance of a life threatening event such as seizures or delirium tremens. Historically benzodiazepines have been utilized to manage withdrawal, and additional medications have begun to be used as well. EHD partners with competent consulting physicians who can prescribe the appropriate medication, and our nurses are expert in administering and evaluating detox medications under those orders.
After detox, non-addictive anti-craving medications may assist in sustaining recovery. These may include Naltrexone, Antabuse and Campral. We work with the client and the prescribing clinician to evaluate whether these options fit your recovery plan, and we encourage every client to involve their own physician or primary care provider in these decisions.

Five Rules for Detoxing from Alcohol at Home
Repeated alcohol use changes the brain in ways that can cause seizures when you stop. Clients tell us they have done it alone before; we ask them not to gamble on it again.
Alcohol withdrawal requires medical intervention, and your full medical history matters. At EHD you are under 24 hour nurse supervision with a physician directing care, not a phone consult.
Privacy and comfort matter to the outcome. For most clients that is home; when it is not, we can arrange a detox in a top hotel or resort instead.
Dehydration comes fast during withdrawal. Your nurse focuses on hydration through the first 36 to 48 hours, then on the proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that support recovery.
Detox is one of the hardest things you will do. We keep the process professional, private, and humane, and we stay with you into the recovery that follows.
